About Us

Perspective and Approach

At TeDD's, we believe many brain injuries, mental health and addiction conditions present as a progressive condition that weaves itself into the fabric of every aspect of our lives over time.  Activities which used to be enjoyable outlets for stresses now seem to have little meaning or pleasure. Simple tasks become confusing and frustrating.  Conflict and stress become a regular component of daily life.

Over time, life events and relationships seem to be out of control despite best attempts to 'make things right.'  Losses can mount and the need to respond becomes ever more crucial.  'Best laid plans' to turn the tide and repair relationships, careers and business seem to fuel frustration and disappointment.

The financial and time cost of a treatment center, being away and isolated from work and/or  loved ones often seems too high.  We are grounded on the proven science of rehabilitation of the brain and every aspect and activity, while at TeDDs' or remotely, is designed to promote restoration of mental and emotional function,  cope and excel at life challenges.  Gradually taking on real-life challenges and responsibilities and finding the needed solutions, supported by our staff gives our clients a lasting recovery experience grounded in scientific evidence, based on individual real lives.

Consider this opportunity for rehabilitation of mind, body, spirit and start on the recovery journey you need to fulfill that life and your world that is waiting for the healthy you.

THE Basis of Our Programs

REMOTE / ONLINE & SHORT-TERM RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS

Our innovative and unique therapeutic approach  is based on over twenty years of research, education, experience and practice.  This experience includes providing expert advice to governments, organizations and people on what treatment courses actually work.  We succeed with clients where other programs have failed; for new clients, we commit to ensuring that a remove / online or residential program with us will be the only one ever required.

TeDDs program leads the Canadian recovery field through addressing the proven scientific reality of what addiction actually is.  Brain changes in addiction are proven and we understand them.  Alcoholism and addiction progress over a lifetime through epigenetic changes affecting perceptions, reactions, behaviours and increasingly flawed decision making processes.  Regardless of the substances, without proper treatment all paths lead to the same tragic results. Through education and insight oriented therapy, our clients finally gain mastery over addiction by seeing how it has developed, why it has such a hold over them and why it continues even while knowing what it has done to their lives and their families.

Our beautiful residence and our staff to client ratio of 1.25 to 1 means highly personalized support and care geared to your unique needs.  Our fully rational, common sense approach will give you the solutions you need to relaunch your life.

Recent discoveries in neuroscience over the past 15 years clearly show that the brain and mind of an addict and alcoholic has distinctly different functioning from persons who do not have this disorder.  TeDDs has developed a  model for the development of addiction along the life course by understanding each of the neuroscientific components of this complex disorder.  Matching these changes to the brain in addiction to behavior, both before and during substance use, allows therapy specifically designed to address the underlying root problems that have led to the often near catastrophic outcomes that result from addiction to drugs and/or alcohol.

The principle of neuroplasticity, meaning the brain and mind can and will change positively given the correct therapy and environment, is key to our approach which accelerates the process of healthy recovery and produces lasting change.

Body

Alcoholism and drug addiction are injurious and often life-threatening due to three major factors: direct physiologic effect of the substance, the potential for self or unplanned physical injury, and, near complete interruption of a healthy lifestyle.

Removal of the substance(s) in a safe and supportive manner is critical to breaking and reversing the cycle of physical deconditioning and demise.  A comprehensive initial assessment, support and monitoring is performed by our professional staff to ensure safe and most comfortable detoxification.

Our food at TeDDs is sourced much from local small organic vendors, prepared fresh in superb French and Acadian style and absolutely healthy and delicious.

Recipes can be taken home, (on the condition you help in the preparation!)

Five star nutrition is combined with a exercise class designed by Olympic and professional coaches, delivered by a certified trainer.

Clients attain phenomenal results, typically shifting 15 to 20 lbs of fat to muscle in 30 days, regaining flexibility, motor skills and balance.

Friends and family will be amazed at the 'new you,' fit, healthy and vibrant.

Mind - 'Neuroplasticity = Hope'

Both due to direct effect of the chemical and responses to continuing negative stimuli, various brain regions and pathways of the alcoholic and the drug addict becomes progressively maladapted.   With continued use, substances 'hijack' the normal reward system such that executive brain function fails to recognize the myriad risks and negative consequences.  Emotional centers within the brain also become over-sensitive and excessively reactive leading to additional life problems.

The TeDDs program accelerates healthy neural re-adaptation (brain healing and recovery) such that clients develop healthy decision making soonest and a general sense of peace and contentment.  Successful lives are put firmly on track.

Our daily bioneural- feedback assisted meditation, a method whereby your stress and emotional levels are recorded throughout the meditation.  You can see whether your meditation puts you in a calm place. It's fun, teaches relaxation techniques and shows your progress as you begin to heal at TeDDs.

Spirit

We are here to answer your spirit's need for support, healing and growth.

Regardless of the presence, absence or type of religious beliefs, over the course of addiction and alcoholism, the spirit feels deeply wounded. As alcohol and/or drugs become increasingly impossible to control or avoid, the losses mount and despair grows, a 'tipping point' is reached.  The decision to continue attempts to quit on one's own despite repeated failures, to seek help or continue to death becomes the essential spiritual question.

At TeDDs, we acknowledge that clients and their loved ones have experienced enough pain and trauma and the decision has been made to start the healing journey.  Firmly grounded in the neuroscience of recovery,  TeDDs staff will help you let go the shame and guilt of addiction, while discussing the realities of what needs to be accomplished and how to regain the trust and respect of friends family and colleagues.

You will not leave TeDDs with a  forever 'disease' of alcoholism or addiction, rather, you'll understand the true disorder for which full recovery is possible and how to regain and progress in the life you hoped for.

A Rehabilitation Experience, Second To None

With nutrition, education, rest, fun and an exercise program second to none, you'll leave TeDDs looking and feeling better than you or your friends and family could possibly hope for in such a short time period.

TeDDs (becoming famous) exercise program is a one hour exercise class, four to five days per week, adapted to the level that one is at and guarantees phenomenal result, whether ONLINE or IN-RESIDENCE.

It was formerly taught at Florida Jack's Boxing Club Youth Centre which was located in the heart of Toronto at Yonge and Bloor.  Designed by professionals, former Olympian and national competitors and coaches, simple exercises work together to restore form, balance and fitness while acquiring new skills.  Challenging but fun, it was voted 'The Toughest Workout in Toronto' for 5 years in a row by Toronto Life Magazine.  Delivered at TeDDs (and available by Zoom free to clients who graduate), this workout is fully restorative while enhancing healthy brain adaptation, critical to recovery.

our approach

Principles, Practices and Processes

Principles of the TeDD's Program

Our program is based on science: what has proven to work for people with alcoholism and addictions.  There has been tremendous progress over the past ten years in understanding the science of addiction.  At TeDDs, we stay on top of science so that we can develop a recovery program for you based on facts, not wishful thinking.  We offer:

1.  Safe, individualized care with maximal opportunity for comfortable, enjoyable and meaningful recovery from alcohol, drugs and sequela.

2. Compassionate, trauma-informed care focusing on understanding of the condition, individual root causes and solutions.

3. Holistic approach: attention to all elements of mind, body and spirit and programs developed to meet evolving client needs in each area.

4. Respect, time and support for individual client needs to attend to pressing career, family and financial matters.

5. Development and practice of client skills and strategies for optimal re-integration back into their community with sustained recovery from substances.

6. Application and contribution to best practices in drug addictions and alcoholism remains a continuous practice at TeDD's on Chapel.

Practices

Recovery is a dynamic, fluid pathway.  Especially in early recovery as you will experience at TeDD's, mental, physical and self-worth perspectives change rapidly as alcohol and/ or drugs lose their control over the person's thinking, feelings and behaviours.  The rate of these changes varies among people, dependent on a number of factors including age, history of substance use, genetics, gender and life circumstances.  Personalized initial assessment and weekly reassessments including neurocognitive testing are performed to gain a continuing consensus of client's needs and challenges, and adapt the care plan and processes to create the best experience to facilitate optimal results for one's time at TeDD's and beyond.

Central to our practice approach is the acknowledgement that addressing the root causes or creating a willingness to 'look inside' oneself is a fundamental aspect of the recovery process.  Evidence and experience show that 97% of treatment clientele have experienced life and belief altering trauma.  While forms, perceptions and mental responses vary across people, the trauma experience(s) combined with genetic predisposition create a 'diathesis' or platform for development of drug addiction and alcoholism.  With introduction of mind-altering substances, the disease becomes triggered and the cascade of increasingly adverse and injurious events and behaviours ensue over time.  With often re-traumatization occurring over the course of the disease, addiction and alcoholism progress paradoxically as they become the sole source of relief from the hurtful circumstances they create.

Friends, loved ones and colleagues are bewildered and often directly impacted by what seems to most as a lack of willpower, selfishness and immorality.  Recovery through seeking help becomes the only solution.

Trauma-informed support

Safety at TeDD's on Chapel means accommodations, food, activities and surroundings are top-notch.  We want you to feel as comfortable and cared for as possible.  Our individualized programs encompass best practices in support and education, and, TeDD's employs a trauma-informed approach which is central to our philosophy in treating the condition.

People who have experienced trauma are at risk of being re-traumatized in every social service and health care setting. The lack of knowledge and understanding about the impact of trauma can get in the way of services providing the most effective care and intervention. When re-traumatization happens, the program has failed the individual who has experienced trauma, and this can leave them feeling misunderstood, unsupported and even blamed. It can also perpetuate a damaging cycle that prevents healing and growth. For example, people affected by trauma from abusive relationships will frequently encounter services that mirror the power and control they experienced in those relationships.  Our staff is  skilled at understanding trauma and is expert at developing therapeutic relationships which are trusting, insightful and compassionate.

Save your career, your family, your dignity

Healthcare and Other Licensed Professionals

It is estimated that approximately 10% to 15% of all healthcare and other licensed professionals will misuse drugs or alcohol at some time during their career, similar to those of the general population. There are multiple reasons for this including high work stress and demand, professional isolation, access to substances and pre-existing personality traits which once facilitated high achievement, yet later created a potential for substance use. Drugs and alcohol are mostly used for “recreational” purposes by healthcare and professional school students. Residents, attending physicians, nurses, dentists, veterinarians and other professionals may use substances for performance enhancement and as self-treatment for various reasons, such as, pain, anxiety, or depression.

A significant proportion becomes dependent. The TeDDs program is uniquely designed to help Canadian professionals. Realizing that one has become dependent on a substance is particularly onerous for licensed professionals, having spent significant time and resources to acquire the skills and credentials to help other people. The essence of their ability to sustain their life’s work is now under serious risk.

The TeDDs program offers expertise, privacy and confidentiality like no other in Canada for licensed professionals. We focus solely on the person and provide complete anonymity for our services. There is no signage at TeDDs; we care for no more than 5 people at a time. The kindness and politeness of our bilingual town is a breath of fresh air and you will be welcomed as a visitor, not a client in a rehab. Any notes that are taken are all returned to you on leaving TeDDs. Our credentials do not require us to report to any external agencies. We will, however, back you maximally through letters of support if you so desire.

Most importantly, while you may arrive here addicted, you will not leave as an ‘addict.’ The new neuroscience shows unequivocally that people can fully recover from this disorder. While a dreadful life experience, addiction need not be a life sentence.
